Strike to begin in family daycares in November

By Lia Lévesque, The Canadian Press

Around 12,000 family daycare workers will start striking in November by opening their services later – both in CPEs and in family daycares.

More specifically, as of Nov. 11, family daycare services will open their doors half an hour later, every day of the week.

The Fédération des intervenantes en petite enfance (FIPEQ), affiliated with the CSQ, has 9,000 members in family daycares and 3,000 in early childhood centres (CPEs).

This pressure tactic will affect many daycare services throughout Quebec.

The first week, daycares will open half an hour later; the second week, one hour later; the third week, one and a half later; and the fourth week, two hours later.

In addition, as of Nov. 15, FIPEQ unionized workers at CPEs will open their doors later, but only on Fridays.

On the first week, the CPEs will open at 7:30 a.m., the second week at 8:30 a.m., the third week at 10 a.m. and the fourth week at 12 p.m.

The FIPEQ submitted its applications in September 2023, but Quebec only submitted its offers last spring.

When asked about this on Wednesday, Treasury Board President Sonia LeBel said that she had submitted her offers when all unions representing workers in the sector had submitted their demands.

Family Minster Suzanne Roy added that “negotiations will continue where they should continue: at the negotiating table.”
