Bird flu cases found in Quebec

By News Staff

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) confirmed that they found two cases of avian influenza (H5N1) at a poultry farm in the les Maskoutain region and Saint-Jean sur Richelieu in Quebec on Sunday.

According to data from the Quebec Poultry Disease Control Team, one of the infected poultry flock came from a non-quota commercial farm in Sainte-Hélène-de-Bagot, in the Montérégie.

A control zone has been established to minimize the possible spread to other poultry farms nearby by a radius of 10km.

The bird flu can be costly for farmers because it could potentially wipe out their entire livestock.

This comes after a teen from British Columbia reportedly had the first human case of contamination with the bird flu in Canada.

The avian flu was also detected at a commercial farm in Saint-André-Avellin, in the Outaouais, last January.

The CFIA reported 948,000 cases of infected birds were found in Quebec last year.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) reminds farmers that anyone who suspects that their poultry may be infected must contact the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
