Quebecers want to abolish time change, public consultation reveals

By The Canadian Press

Daylight saving time has arrived, so we’ll lose an hour of sleep, but we’ll gain some sunshine.

Watches and clocks were put forward yesterday in Canada, except in Saskatchewan and the Yukon, where the time change has been abolished.

Quebec Minister of Justice and Attorney General Simon Jolin-Barrette took the opportunity on Saturday to announce the results of the public consultation conducted on this subject last fall.

It turns out that 91 per cent of respondents want to stop changing the clocks.

Of the more than 214,000 responses recorded, 72 per cent of respondents indicated that they want to end the time change, but keep summer time throughout the year.

The online consultation also collected more than 25,000 comments and highlighted some of the population’s concerns, such as the effects of the time change on sleep, physical and mental health and hours of daylight.

“Additional reflection and consultations are necessary to ensure that we make the best decision for citizens. The desire of Quebecers to end the time change is very clear and rest assured that it will guide the rest of our work on this file,” said Minister Jolin-Barrette in a press release.
