Labour Minister Jean Boulet is launching an investigation within his department into the leak of a sensitive document.
On Tuesday, Québec solidaire MNA Alexandre Leduc got his hands on a draft of Boulet’s upcoming bill on union dues.
The draft states that the Legault government is considering allowing union members to opt out of financial contributions to union activities “that are not directly related to labour relations.”
The CAQ has never hidden its irritation with the education union the Fédération autonome de l’enseignement (FAE), which is challenging Bill 21 on banning religious symbols for certain government employees, including teachers.
During a press scrum at the National Assembly on Wednesday, Boulet explained that he had launched an investigation within his department the day before.
“We need to conduct an investigation. Obviously, this was not leaked by us (the cabinet). It was obtained by my colleague from Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. I really don’t know who could have shared this document,” he said.
Refusing to reiterate his confidence in his own officials, Boulet also raised the issue of parliamentary privilege.
“It’s extremely important that this remain completely confidential. (…) Parliamentarians have a privilege to know, first and foremost, the content of a bill,” he emphasized.
