Montreal’s South Shore community is coming together this weekend, holding a vigil and demonstration in memory of 15-year-old Nooran Rezayi who was fatally shot during a Longueuil police (SPAL) intervention on Sunday afternoon.
With the permission of his parents and in coordination with the authorities, the Association de la Sépulture Musulmane au Québec (ASMQ) is organizing one of the two memorials.
“This vigil is intended as a moment of reflection, solidarity, and support for his family, who are experiencing immense shock and complete incomprehension in the face of this tragedy,” the ASMQ said in a Facebook post.
“The entire community is shocked and angry by this crime, committed by a peace officer,” they added.
“We never thought that one day we would hold a vigil for a young man who was killed by an officer of the peace. How ironic. We’re in shock and we don’t understand. We trying to understand, but it’s incomprehensible,” said Hadjira Belkacem, the president and founder of ASMQ.
The ASMQ said that the objective of the vigil is to:
- Support Nooran’s parents and loved ones.
- Raise awareness among our youth, our police force, and political decision-makers.
- Denounce the unjustified crime committed against a 15-year-old boy.
- Reaffirm their call for justice and truth.
“Both of Nooran’s parents will be present and will speak to pay tribute to their son,” added the ASMQ. “We demand justice for Nooran.”

The vigil will take place on Sept. 27 at 2 p.m. at Parc de Mille Fleur in Longueuil.
“Bring a white flower as a sign of peace and solidarity,” they said.
On Sunday, a peaceful demonstration is also planned.
“We call on everyone, regardless of your origin, skin color, religion, or background, to join us in saying NO to police violence and YES to justice, equality, and respect for human rights,” organizers wrote on Facebook.
“Together, let’s make our voices heard,” they added. “For the memory of Nooran Rezayi.”
The demonstration is set to take place on Sunday at 3 p.m., with the departure from Gérard-Fillion School.
