The Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) will sell certain American products to consumers, which could allow it to donate nearly $9 million to Food Banks of Quebec.
The SAQ indicated Thursday that it was taking this “exceptional measure” at the request of the Quebec government for certain products “whose quality could be altered by March 2027”.
The SAQ specified that it will donate to Food Banks of Quebec an amount equivalent to the cost of products sold during this period “which could total up to $8.6 million”.
Apart from this “exceptional measure”, the ban on selling products from the United States and ordering new ones, decreed on March 4, 2025, remains in effect, the company stressed in a statement.
Quebec had acted in this way, like other provinces, in response to the trade war provoked by the Trump administration.
Eligible products will be available starting Feb. 12 on SAQ.COM and in SAQ Dépôt stores, it was specified, adding that a 15 per cent discount will apply to all products. Products sold in SAQ Dépôt stores will also benefit from the discount usually offered by that banner.
The province asked the state-owned corporation last year to donate some $300,000 worth of U.S. alcohol that was set to expire during the boycott.
