Montreal police investigate suspicious vehicle fire in Verdun

Montreal police (SPVM) are investigating a possible arson involving two vehicles in the city’s Verdun borough overnight – behind a residential building.

Authorities say they received a 911 call around 1:15 a.m. reporting a car on fire near Godin and Bannantyne Avenues.

When officers arrived on the scene, the blaze had spread to another car parked nearby.

Residents from a neighbouring building were evacuated out of precaution. But, after an assessment by firefighters they were able to return.

The building did sustain some damages – a broken window and siding seems to have come down. No injuries were reported.

“Firefighters believe it is possible that an incendiary substance was thrown on one of the cars,” said Manuel Couture, a spokesperson for SPVM.

The two vehicles have been towed for forensic analysis. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
