Pepper spray incident at Mont-Royal metro station prompts temporary evacuation

Montreal police are investigating a pepper spray incident that prompted an evacuation at the Mont-Royal metro station Thursday morning and stopped service on all four lines of the public transit system for at least 20 minutes.

Authorities say several 911 calls were received around 7:50 a.m. reporting the event.

Officers arriving on scene found multiple transit users coughing, prompting a temporary evacuation to ensure safety and the STM to halt service on it’s lines.

Police say camera footage showed an altercation between two men. The suspect allegedly pepper sprayed the victim, a 35-year-old man.

The substance then spread through the air, causing nearby passengers to have difficulty breathing.

Urgences-santé confirmed that two people were evaluated – but are stable.

The suspect remains at large and the investigation is ongoing.
