Montreal bakery behind Dobeš-inspired cookie gets visit from the Habs goalie himself

“A sweet guy,” says Jami Liverman, owner and chef of Bernice Bakery, as the Montreal shop behind the Dobeš-inspired cookie gets a visit from the Habs goalie himself—just a day before his 25th birthday. Johanie Bouffard reports.

Does it get any sweeter than backstopping your team in a deep Stanley Cup playoff run? Jakub Dobeš would say so.

The presumably sweet-toothed Canadiens goaltender found himself in Saint-Henri bakery Bernice on Tuesday to take in a sugary treat named after him.

The “Dobes Puck Cookie” was introduced at Bernice, on Notre-Dame Street, last week, as the Habs began their Eastern Conference final against the Carolina Hurricanes – a playoff milestone made possible by Dobeš’ puck-stopping prowess between the pipes.

It all started earlier this month when the bakery got a mysterious online order from a certain “Jakub D.” for their chocolate chunk cookie.

“We decided that because he ordered the chunk cookies, we wanted to simulate a puck,” said chef-owner Jami Liverman. “And so we decided to make a six-ounce chunk cookie with the same flavour that he ordered.”

The bakery says the cookie was created in honour of Dobeš’ “exceptional performance.”

“It feels pretty heavy. So it’s going to be good,” said Bernice customer Fern Bowie of the Dobes Puck Cookie.

They just never expected the man himself to walk through the door with his family Tuesday to order a box of his namesake baked good.

“Today we had the privilege of welcoming the (city’s) legend, @4doby4 and his family to (endorse) his very own cookie ‘The Dobes Puck Cookie.’ Wishing him and his teammates @canadiensmtl, the best of luck in the 2026 Stanley cup series. #gohabsgo,” the bakery wrote on Instagram alongside photos of the young Canadiens netminder.

“Oh my gosh, such a sweet guy, so humble, so low key, like came in very nonchalant. It was great,” Liverman said.

Fans serenade Dobeš on his birthday

The cookie may have been an early birthday treat to himself, as Dobeš is celebrating his 25th birthday Wednesday, coinciding with Game 4 of the Eastern Conference final. Montreal is down 2-1 in the series after its first back-to-back defeats of the playoffs.

Fans waiting outside the Bell Centre Wednesday afternoon at the end of practice intercepted the birthday boy, who stopped to sign autographs — on jerseys, ball caps, and carboard stop signs with his name on them. Fans then sang him happy birthday.

“He signed my Dobeš stop sign, and I’m a goalie too, so that made it really exciting,” said young fan Allison Walsh.

“He’s such a good goalie. He just comes up clutch when he needs to. It’s so awesome,” said Asher Smytheddy.

“It seems like the more he gets knocked around, the more focused he gets, where somebody might lose focus,” Stephen added.

Habs fans are hoping Dobeš’ gift to them is a victory against the ‘Canes to level the series.

“Habs Game 4, I’m so excited. Hopefully we can pull off the win,” Asher said.
