Montreal police arrest suspect in nightclub shooting

Montreal Police (SPVM) arrested a suspect Wednesday in connection with a shooting in a nightclub on Saint-Laurent Boulevard last month. Two innocent victims were injured in the legs by gunfire.
Mohamed Aroud, 27, was arrested in Saint-Leonard. He is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
He is facing several charges including: aggravated assault, possession and use restricted firearms in committing an offence and criminal negligence. The charges, if proven, could carry a sentence of a up to a maximum of 14 years in prison.
The incident happened on May 9, at around 3 a.m., when a conflict broke out between people inside Club École Privée on Saint-Laurent Boulevard, near Milton Street, in the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough. It was then that a shot was fired.
Two women, aged 19 and 25, who were not involved in the conflict, were hit in the legs by a firearm projectile. A tall suspect wearing dark clothing was then seen fleeing on foot. The two victims were transported to hospital and survived their injuries.
“Public safety remains our top priority and we continue our efforts on the ground at all times to ensure it, especially when innocent people are victims of such serious acts. Our teams are working steadily, both in prevention and in response to targeted events,” explains Commander David Paradis, Chief of the Northern Project Investigation Section. Adding that, “gun violence crimes have decreased by more than 50 per cent in the city since 2021.”
