Professors at McGill’s Faculty of Arts issue five-day strike mandate

By Lia Lévesque, The Canadian Press

Professors at McGill University’s Faculty of Arts in Montreal have just given themselves a mandate for a five-day strike, to be exercised at the appropriate time.

The McGill Arts Faculty Association states that the five-day strike mandate was adopted by 86 per cent.

Of the 254 eligible members, 222 exercised their right to vote, the union points out.

The union represents professors with permanent or tenure-track positions, librarians and contract academic staff, it says.

This vote took place as part of the negotiation of a first collective agreement — a phase which is generally quite long, since several clauses must then be negotiated, unlike a renewal of an agreement.

When contacted, McGill administration stated that it respects “the right of faculty members to organize as they choose, in accordance with Quebec labour law.” It nevertheless maintains that this strike mandate “in no way alters our commitment to pursue negotiations constructively and in good faith.”
