Scheer renews call to waive privilege on SNC-Lavalin affair ahead of committee meeting

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – A day before the federal ethics committee meets to discuss the SNC-Lavalin affair, the Conservatives are trying to increase the pressure on the prime minister to allow for a full airing of the controversy.

Speaking in the foyer of the House of Commons, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer is again making a call on Justin Trudeau to waive all privilege on the affair for former Attorney General JodyWilsonn-Raybould.

“Justin Trudeau is out of excuses. His only option is full transparency. He must finally end the coverup,” Scheer said. “Both former ministers should be able to speak freely.”

The ethics committee will consider a Conservative motion to begin its own investigation into this affair and to call Wilson-Raybould and former minister Jane Philpott to testify. Both have said there is more to the story than what Wilson-Raybould said in her initial testimony.

The Liberals used their majority last week to shut down the justice committee probe.

But speaking in B.C., Trudeau said the question at the heart of this is: was there any pressure over the SNC case, noting his government already gave her the chance to speak about that.

“We move forward as a government and granted an unprecedented waiver, which allowed a full testimony on the matter at hand,” Trudeau said.

When asked if he agreed with having his MPs call on Wilson-Raybould and Philpott to speak in the House of Commons on the SNC affair, Trudeau said that was a decision for them to make.

Wilson-Raybould says she plans to file a written submission to the justice committee with new evidence about the case.
