Pot products and cannabis innovations to come

CALGARY – In the first few months of legalization, a select number of pot products were made available in Canada. Pot users are basically limited to different strains of bud and oil capsules or tinctures.

Edibles are set to be legalized in October and experts in the industry predict pot products will continue to evolve as they become more socially acceptable and mainstream.

“The one interesting part that has kind of been overlooked is the relationship to the oils and the edibles,” noted VP of operations at FOUR20 Premium Market, Ryan Kaye. “Certainly, the future of this product is less on the smoking side and more on the smokeless side.”

He believes there will continue to be breakthroughs with new products in the coming weeks and months.

“The innovative products that are coming out are important to people,” he said.┬áThere are quite a few ways to enjoy the buzz of THC oil.

“There’s the caplets that are gaining in popularity as well. It’s just a really easy and convenient way to consume the oils while you are out and about.”

Kaye believes liquid products will continue to grow in popularity.

“Some of them even have a spray oil right now. We know that the licensed producers are working on a variety of products including beverages, which I think there is going to be a great market for. They would be similar to an alcohol product in that there would be a single-serving size and the amount of the intoxicant would be minimal. They have limited it to 10 milligrams.”

He contends there will be some limitations on what we will see after the legalization of edibles.

“Of course, there will never be THC and alcohol in the same beverage but these products are being positioned as an alternative. So you have like a cooler or a beer-like product with maybe three or five milligrams of THC versus alcohol. I have even heard of one licensed producer developing THC potato chips. I have no idea how they would do that.”

Meantime, Carl’s Jr. is testing a CBD-infused burger as a 4/20 special. The “Rocky Mountain high Cheeseburger Delight” has two patties, pickled jalapenos, cheese, and will be infused with five milligrams of CBD, the form of cannabis that does not provide a traditional high.

It will be sold exclusively at the Denver, Colorado locations for $4.20.
