MONTREAL (CITYNEWS) – The world’s cargo largest plane landed at Montreal’s Mirabel airport on Friday night, loaded with medical equipment.

The Antonov An-225 was packed with supplies from China, mainly gowns and masks.

It is the world’s largest aircraft, with a wingspan of 88 metres and a capacity to transport 250 tonnes of material.

The delivery was organized by Quebec’s Nolinor Aviation, with the help of Toronto-based company Momentum, to ensure the province does not run out of supplies during the pandemic.

“Loading the aircraft in China took eight hours,” said Marco Prud’Homme, president of Nolinor. “Unloading the aircraft should take between six to eight hours.”

For the past two weeks, the Antonov has been used to transport medical protective equipment. It recently made stops in Poland, France and Germany.

“The process in total took about three weeks,” said Prud’Homme. “The last week was pretty much 24 hours a day, trying to set everything with customs, bringing cargo to the airport, loading the aircraft, and also doing the oversight of all the operations with the carrier.”
