MONTREAL – More than 500 people have signed an online petition asking Dawson College to move all final exams online as COVID-19 cases in Quebec continue to rise.
Summer semester classes were entirely online but certain exams–such as physics, chemistry, and math–are slated to take place in person at the school during next week’s exam period.
The school has said social distancing measures will be in place and its rules for wearing masks and hand hygiene meet government guidelines.
For those students expected to take the in-person tests, the school is advising anyone with a fever, cough, or shortness of breath to stay home–something the petition on Change.org calls “completely insufficient”.
“Students with symptoms will not want to miss the final exam, which will put all other students at risk of infection,” reads the petition, created by Olivia Bouzaglo.
“Further, certain persons are asymptomatic. Consequently, it would be impossible to confirm that everyone attending the exam does not have the virus.”
Several post-secondary schools in the Montreal area including Concordia University, McGill, and the Université de Montreal are holding all final exams virtually.
