A Montreal Muslim truck driver was allegedly attacked while on duty in Saint-Laurent earlier this month, according to a Muslim rights group.
The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) shared a video online of the Dec. 4 incident.
The footage starts with one man holding a snow brush and coming towards the person filming. The alleged attacker then swings the snow brush, seemingly striking the driver repeatedly.
“Things are turning to be violent, extremely violent,” said Samer Majzoub, the president of the Canadian Muslim Forum (CMF).
CityNews has not been able to independently verify what may have occurred before the video begins.
According to Montreal police, officers were called to an industrial parking lot on Wright Street near Deslauriers Street around 9:35 a.m. that morning, after a conflict between two men escalated.
In the footage, the alleged attacker can be heard telling the driver to “get out of here” and that he is “sick of those stupid people.”
The video then cuts, showing the alleged attacker confronting the person filming and telling them they are not allowed to record him.
“Our political system has to come down, has to call for unity, has to call for calmness and has to stop targeting any citizen,” Majzoub said.
The NCCM also shared a separate video with CityNews, recorded by the alleged attacker himself and posted on TikTok.
In that video, the man films his hands and says he was once again in handcuffs, and makes reference to what he calls a “sloppy driver,” referring to him as a “dog” who he says he went after with a snowbrush.
Montreal police say when they arrived on scene, they met with the victim, a 35-year-old man, who they say reported being struck in the upper body with a blunt object.
The victim did not appear to have visible injuries and was not taken to hospital.
A 45-year-old man was arrested at the scene, but later released after police say the victim was unsure about pursuing legal action at that time. The SPVM says the victim informed them on Dec. 9 that he was ready to engage in legal proceedings.
The case has now been transferred to the general investigator of the Montreal police. No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
“What we are seeing that we never seen in our history in Quebec and in Canada is some sort of approval of really targeting the other, what we believe is the other,” Majzoub said. “Because of his religion or his head on his background.”
Uber driver attacked
This is the second reported attack on a Montreal Muslim driver brought to light by the NCCM this week, with both alleged incidents having occurred earlier this month.
On Dec. 6, a Muslim Uber driver was reportedly threatened by a passenger after being asked about his faith.
“I’m going to slit your throat,” the passenger allegedly said before pulling out a knife.
The driver was not injured after another passenger intervened.
That incident was reported to police and is now under investigation by the SPVM’s hate crimes unit.
“If giving the impression that there is certain segment of our society is less citizen, less of a value than others, that’s what will be happening,” Majzoub said.
The SPVM has been compiling statistics of reported offences — though not necessarily convictions — specifically targeting Montreal’s Arab-Muslim and Jewish communities since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on Oct. 7, 2023.
In the last roughly 12 months — from Dec. 11, 2024, to Nov. 30, 2025 — Montreal police say there were nine reported hate crimes against people, five property crimes and five incidents targeting the city’s Arab-Muslim community.
During the previous 12-month period — from Dec. 20, 2023, to Dec. 11, 2024 — there were 23 reported hate crimes against people, five property crimes and 15 incidents targeting the city’s Arab-Muslim community.
Advocates warn many more incidents go unreported.
“We are extremely worried what will be coming in the coming days, month and year,” said Majzoub.
