Canadians want more investment in renewable energy, poll suggests

CALGARY – It appears the majority of Canadians want more investment in renewable energy like wind and solar over oil and gas.

A new survey by Angus Reid found 54 per cent of Canadians believe investing in renewables should be the priority in Canada.

This jumped to more than seven in 10 among people who did not vote for the Conservatives in the 2019 election.

The top picks for which kind of renewable energy should be explored were solar panels (84 per cent) and wind turbine farms (77 per cent).

Only 12 per cent said oil and gas investment should be the focus.

About a third of Canadians say they would like to see investment in both equally.

This rose to over half, 53 per cent, among people who voted blue in the last federal election.

The survey also found Albertans are more likely to support investing in renewable energy and oil and gas equally, rather than oil and gas should being the primary goal on its own.

Some 46 per cent of those polled chose “energy independence” as the top priority, which rose to over 70 per cent among past Conservative voters.

This was especially true for people in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.
