Plante, Coderre congratulate Trudeau on minority victory

Montreal (CityNews) ─ Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante and mayoral candidate Denis Coderre congratulated the newly re-elected Justin Trudeau for his Liberal minority victory on Tuesday.

Plante says she’s looking forward to working with Trudeau to advance issues that matter to the city, like gun control and restricting illegal firearms.

“My message is that we will continue to work with the federal government as we’ve done before,” said Plante.

With the Liberals forming another minority government, Plante says Canadians are looking for more collaboration.

She says she wants to see Montreal represented in the council of ministers.

“The top on my list is public security and gun control, so I will continue to talk about that meeting with the MPs and hoping really hard and pushing the federal government and take that lead on that matter on that project,” said Plante.

Also on Tuesday, Plante made a commitment as part of her municipal election campaign that her administration would respect the 1992 consensus that no building in Montreal can be higher than Mount Royal to protect the view of the city.

Meanwhile former mayor and current mayoral candidate Coderre says he would work with Trudeau’s Liberals, if elected in November, on issues that matter to Montrealers. Those include the granting of a partial transfer of the goods and services tax (GST) in order to diversify the sources of income within the Greater Montreal area.

Coderre says he also wants to work with the federal government to fight against opioids and the circulation of firearms.

“If you want stability, you want to make sure that we bring back the magic and put Montreal on the map and the people who know how the system works through the federal and provincial level, well you have a great opportunity on Nov. 7 to vote for our team.”
