Quebec warns of fake text message scam offering $500 credit

By News Staff

Quebec is warning people of fake text messages offering a $500 credit if they click on the link.

The fraudulent texts were sent hours after the François Legault government tabled its spring budget on Tuesday and announced that Quebec residents 18+ earning less than $100,000 will receive a one-time payment of $500 to offset the impact of inflation.

The Coalition Avenir Québec tweeted out Tuesday night: “There is a fraudulent text message circulating that states that an Interac transfer of $500.00 has been sent to you from us. This is a fraud. Please do not click on the link‼”

As he tabled the budget, Finance Minister Éric Girard said the money will be transferred directly into a person’s bank account after they file their 2021 tax returns.
