New Montreal Holocaust Museum gets more funding

By News Staff

Montreal is pledging $1.5 million dollars for the city’s new Holocaust Museum and the federal government will provide $20 million.

Construction is expected to begin next year on the $90 million project.

The new Montreal Holocaust Museum is expected to open in 2025, located at 3535 St-Laurent Blvd., in the Plateau.

In February, Quebec pledged $20 million for the museum – which has also raised funds from The Azrieli Foundation, various organizations, and numerous private donors.

The Montreal Holocaust Museum has said the new location will enable it to reach a wider audience, display more of its 14,000 artifacts and implement interactive tools like holograms of survivors stories.

The current museum is in Côte-des-Neiges.

On Wednesday, Montreal city council designated May as Jewish Heritage Month.

It is estimated that some 35,000 Holocaust survivors made their way to Canada, and 9,000 of them settled in Montreal.
