Montreal park could be renamed to honour Dr. Henry Morgentaler

By News Staff

The opposition at City Hall wants Montreal to move forward with naming a park in the borough of MercierHochelagaMaisonneuve after Dr. Henry Morgentaler, who was a driving force behind the legalization of abortion in Canada.

Dr. Morgentaler sparked controversy for decades in the fight to give women the right to choose.

Elected officials of the borough agreed last fall to rename Parc de Beaujeu in his honour.

It’s located near the site of Dr. Morgentaler’s first abortion clinic, opened in the late ’60s on Honoré-Beaugrand, in Tétreaultville.

The application must now be submitted to Montreal City Council for approval.

With the debate resurfacing in the United States on Roe v. Wade with the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion, Ensemble Montréal thinks it would send a strong and symbolic message to rename the park.

Dr. Morgentaler died in Toronto in 2013, at the age of 90.
