Montreal pianist raising awareness for Ukraine

“It's about making people stop, meditate, pray,” says Serhiy Salov, Montreal pianist raising awareness for Ukraine, his home country, through outdoor performances. Pamela Pagano reports.

One note at a time, Montreal pianist, Serhiy Salov, is raising awareness for Ukraine.

He joined forces with Le Maison Alcan in downtown Montreal, where he gives free performances outside.

His wish is to have harmony not just in his music, but in Ukraine as well.

“It’s about making people stop, meditate, pray,” said Salov.

Originally from Ukraine, the internationally renown pianist moved to Canada after his career launched when he won the Concours musical international de Montréal in 2004.

Today, Salov has four children and loves the city as much as he loves playing the piano.

But he cannot stop thinking about his home country.

“You are either fighting with the Ukrainian forces, armed forces, or you are helping the Ukrainian armed forces. So I decided to do the latter,” he said.

During Salov’s emotion-filled concerts, he encourages spectators to purchase a “tourniquet” online – a device that helps stop bleeding through compression – that will be sent out to Ukrainian troops.

“One of those devices is quite pricey,” he explained.

Every concert begins with the Ukraine national anthem and ends with John Lennon’s “Imagine” – the pieces in between vary each day.

But through every performance, someone is inspired.

“It’s about the love of everything. It’s about the love of humanity,” said Salov.

The streets of Downtown Montreal will be filled with the music of Salov’s performances from Wednesday to Friday until June 10th. And the initiative of purchasing a tourniquet – wraps up at the end of the month.

“Thank you to Montrealers who will donate a tourniquet,” said Salov. “Thank you so much, in the name of music and in the name of Ukraine.”
