Longueuil police test speeding project with kids

Sometimes drivers need to see who they’re endangering when they’re speeding – to understand why it’s important to drive the speed limit.
That’s exactly what Longueuil police are counting on by introducing a new project that uses children with digital backpacks to let drivers know if they are speeding in a school zone.
The project was initially unveiled by Laval police and equips backpacks carried by school children with large digital indicator panels that display the speed of cars as they pass school zones.
Raising awareness
Police believe the live radar project can raise awareness about speeding in school zones in order to better protect children.
School zones are always clearly identified to ensure children’s safety, but distractions and impatience continue to contribute to unsafe driving conditions, despite Quebec drivers knowing that speeding in a school zone is dangerous.
Not only is it dangerous, but speeding can also net drivers some serious fines. The Highway Safety Code clearly stipulates that those caught speeding in school zones can face double the amount of fines and demerit points.
