Canadiens trade Shea Weber to Golden Knights for Evgenii Dadonov

The Montreal Canadiens have traded captain Shea Weber for forward Evgenii Dadonov of the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Canadiens made the announcement Thursday evening.

Weber had not played for the Habs since helping lead the team to the Stanley Cup final in 2021.

He was forced to miss the entire 2021-22 season with injury.

“Not only was Shea an exceptional hockey player who played through significant injuries in an attempt to bring the Stanley Cup back to Montreal, he was also a great leader whose leadership will have a positive impact on our team well beyond his time with us,” said Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes in a statement.

Montreal was already hinting at the possibility of needed a new captain come the fall.

“I think it’s highly unlikely that Shea is going to be physically capable of playing again,” Hughes said in April.

In Dadonov the Canadiens get a 33-year-old left-handed forward who played in 413 career games in the NHL with the Florida Panthers, Ottawa Senators, and Golden Knights.

He has 124 goals and 141 assists.

“I also want to welcome Evgenii Dadonov to our organization,” added Hughes in Thursday’s statement. “He is a talented forward who has produced at all levels since the start of his career.”
