A 16-year-old has been sentenced to five years in connection to the death of Lucas Gaudet – who was stabbed outside a high school on Montreal’s West Island Feb. 8.

During what has been called an altercation, Gaudet, 16, suffered deadly stab wounds to his upper body.

Police had said the suspects and the victims knew each other.

The suspect was charged with second-degree murder and attempted murder for attacking a 15-year-old boy in the same altercation. That victim was treated in hospital, but had non-life-threatening injuries.

The teen, who is a minor and cannot be identified due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, pled guilty to one count of second-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault on Tuesday.

The 16-year-old is expected to spend two years and 10 months in custody – and the rest under supervision outside of youth detention.

The sentence was based on a joint recommendation from both the Crown and defence.

The teen didn’t have a previous criminal record and pled guilty quickly after his arrest.

Gaudet, a John Rennie High School student, was remembered by his family as someone who loved hockey and was a kind teenager.
