Six Black women from Montreal launch real estate series on YouTube

Diverse City: "I get inspired by people that are my age, that look like me, that are doing boss things," says Kipola Wakilongo, Montreal real estate agent and cast member of the web series 'Selling Montreal.’ Fariha Naqvi-Mohamed reports.

Have you ever wondered what the world of real estate is like?

Well, six Black women in the city tell-all with their upcoming YouTube series, Selling Montreal.

Kipola Wakilongo, Cindy Charles, Gloria Ntambue, Ange Iradukunda, Sheila Dorceus and Magalie Nlandu are all licensed real estate agents working in Montreal.

Throughout the series, the group will look at all the ins and outs of the industry as they hope to inspire more people to join the field or to help people who may be buying or selling homes to have a bit of new knowledge.

“There are so many people interested in getting into real estate, whether from the client perspective, as a buyer or people who are thinking about it as a career path,” said Wakilongo. “And what I am hoping to accomplish is still to encourage people to move forward with real estate because there is a lot of benefit that comes with it but also just getting them more prepared, I guess in terms of the realities to expect when you get into it.”

“You get to see some of the stuff that you don’t see on TV,” added Dorceus. “The stuff people don’t want us or anybody to know about real estate; we talk about it.”
Added Charles: “Real estate is just such a smart way to grow wealth and generational wealth.”

While making money is great, the group says it’s not their only goal in the industry.

“Cause when I started, I wanted to make money but fast forward to eight years, and I just want to educate people on real estate to make sure that they’re so well prepared and that they can also do it themselves,” said Nlandu. “And I don’t know, maybe other real estate brokers who will be inspired by us and also Black women.

“So that’s something that I’m really excited about.”

And knowing that someone like you is succeeding in the industry can be helpful for some.

“From a consumer perspective, the average coloured person who is looking to buy or to sell, I think it’s amazing for them to see that they can find representation that looks like them,” said Charles. “Until I met these ladies, I almost thought I was a unicorn out there. I was not coming across that many people of colour.”

“That too has been an amazing experience to have that sisterhood with these beautiful Black women, just sharing this experience. I hope it inspires other coloured people going into business and the average person who wants to do business with people who look like them.”

Added Iradukunda: “Wherever you come from or what your background is, you can always make a name for yourself. There are people like you who are rooting for you, and I’m lucky to have met all of these beautiful women here who encourage me to be a better real estate agent and person.”

Episodes of Selling Montreal air on their YouTube channel every Monday at 7 p.m. in September.
