Mile End named 5th ‘coolest’ neighbourhood in the world

Montrealers have always known the appeal of Mile End – it has good food, cute shops and iconic streets.

But it seems the neighbourhood has achieved recognition on the international stage.

Mile End placed fifth in a Time Out survey of the “coolest” neighbourhoods in the world.

It’s one of three Canadian neighbourhoods on the list alongside Toronto’s lively Dundas West (#12) and Vancouver’s colourful West End (#25).

Mile End was recognized for many world class institutions like its rival bagel shops, famous cafés or the newer establishments making their mark.

“You’ve got one heck of a neighbourhood,” was how Time Out writers put it.

Another aspect of Mile End that solidified its spot in the top five of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods: its skate park under the Rosemont underpass. The skate park often hosts block parties like Digital Block Party and MARCHÉ_MAPP, running until the end of November.

The annual Time Out survey polled 20,000 city dwellers as well as local experts to come up with this year’s comprehensive list.

The survey looked at many factors including accessibility to culture and nightlife, food and drink options, lively street and community ambiance.

“They’re distinctive districts that you can walk across in half an hour or less, but could spend a whole day or more exploring. They’re great areas for people to live, visit and stay.”

Taking the top spot – and fairly unknown to foreigners – was Colonia Americana in Guadalajara, Mexico, known to many Mexicans as the country’s cultural capital.

Another spot in Montreal recently claimed another Time Out award. Verdun’s Wellington Street was ranked the “coolest” street in the world earlier this summer.
