Legal helpline back for Quebecers

By News Staff

The Young Bar of Montreal (YBM) Legal helpline is back for its 39th edition. On October 22 and 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., citizens will be able to receive free legal advice over the phone from volunteer lawyers and notaries. This free service for Quebecers is set up by the YBM, in partnership with the Barreau du Québec and the CAIJ.

“Young lawyers are at the heart of our strive to make justice accessible and make a difference, year after year, in the lives of Quebec citizens. The YBM Legal helpline clinic is a good example of initiatives that are making a real difference in the lives of Quebecers,” said Mtre Alexandra Paquette, YBM President.

“Going through the justice system can at times be difficult and it is essential to offer activities that allow the population to be informed and to know their rights, and this, free of charge. Several initiatives already exist to help people find answers to their legal questions and the YBM is proud to contribute to these efforts through its Clinic,” they said in a press release.

More than 4,000 calls from citizens were received and processed last year as part of this initiative. The most frequently asked questions are related to family law, neighbourly relations, consumer goods, labour and management of estates.

YBM has been offering this service twice a year since 2018, with the support of more than a hundred volunteer lawyers and the collaboration of the Young Bar of Quebec (YBQ) and the Association des Jeunes Barreaux de Région (AJBR).
