Due to the extreme cold warning issued by Environment Canada Friday, several ski centers in Quebec closed their slopes.

“The presence of an arctic air mass combined with moderate winds will cause wind chill values between -38 and -48 today and Saturday,” said the weather agency.

Le Relais Ski Center, Mont Sainte-Anne, Stoneham Resort and Mont Sutton announced on their Facebook pages that they would close fully Friday for the safety of not only skiers, but their employees, and the equipment.

Stoneham and Mont-Sainte-Anne said tickets for the day would be automatically refunded. Skiing lessons scheduled for Saturday would also  be postponed to a later date.

“This closure includes all our activities, including access to the alpine touring,” reads the post. “We will be closely monitoring the weather forecast for Saturday in order to prepare the operating plan accordingly. An update will be made on Friday at the end of the day for the weekend operation plan.”

Mount Sutton also announced lessons would be postponed, but should reopen by Saturday from 10 a.m. – while Le Relais will reopen by 12pm.

The Village Vacances Valcartier also closed its winter playground, but indoor activities remained open.
