Petition against Bill 21 tabled at National Assembly

A petition aiming to repeal certain portions of Bill 21 that affect the rights and freedoms of marginalized people was tabled at the National Assembly by Liberal MNA Greg Kelley on Feb. 2, 2023.

The petition was launched last summer by the Red Coalition – a group that fights to end systemic racism in Quebec. It has garnered 1,175 signatures.

It states: “We ask the Government of Québec to immediately repeal the portions of Bill 21 that affect the rights and freedoms of marginalized individuals, in order to exclude: teachers, lawyers, physicians, dentists, midwives, and childcare providers, as well as any individuals whose duties and functions are not mentally or physically impeded by their religious symbols or clothing.”

This is not the first petition against Bill 21 that has been presented at both the National Assembly and the House of Commons.

Bill 21 was adopted in 2019 and prevents some public servants including teachers, police officers and judges from wearing religious symbols while on the job.
