The prosecutor read a statement of facts in court Thursday which stated the girl began suffering from serious mental health issues in 2019 and by 2020 it was getting much worse, adding she did not want to see her mother.
At the end of December her mother noticed a blood stained piece of clothing in the laundry.
The woman’s niece told her the girl had injured herself and the mother was purchasing necessary bandages and cream from the pharmacy, but let her niece treat her daughter and did not ask questions.
On Jan. 4, 2021 the mother called 911 after a family member informed her that the girl was not breathing.
The court also shed light on the mother’s living situation, coming to Canada for an arranged marriage with an older man, where she lived with in a dysfunctional home with his family, specifying she let her niece care for the child because she had studied to be a doctor.
The prosecution recommended a two-year prison term.
