Commission recommends that Montreal ban gas stoves

A commission for the City of Montreal recommends that it should ban the installation of new indoor fixed appliances, including gas stoves, and also recommends phasing out heating systems that run on fossil fuels in existing buildings and prohibiting connecting new ones to natural gas lines.
The committee believes that limiting the connection to natural gas will allow Montreal to get closer to its goal of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions from buildings by 2040, a promise made by Mayor Valérie Plante at the Montreal Climate Summit last summer.
The city’s water, environment and sustainable development commission also calls on the city to promote zero-emission appliances like heat pumps and heat storage units.
It encourages the city to provide financial support for the transition to carbon neutrality that would take into account economic and social considerations – and notes that Montreal’s existing commercial and institutional buildings emit 57 per cent of greenhouse gases in building stock, but represent only 4.1 per cent of buildings.
The report, which includes a total of 25 recommendations, will be presented to city council in March.
