Ryan Reynolds designs shirt for 2023 Terry Fox Run

This year’s shirt honouring one of Canada’s most respected and inspirational figures was designed by a Vancouver-born Hollywood actor.

The Terry Fox Foundation says it has collaborated with Ryan Reynolds, who posted a picture of himself wearing the long-sleeve t-shirt to his social media over the weekend.

Following the post, the foundation says demand for the shirt, which also comes in a short-sleeve t-shirt, has been so overwhelming, it’s having its first-ever pre-sale, which went live this Family Day long weekend.

The shirt is a white, crew neck top with Fox standing on the front and it’s covered in messages he received from the millions of people whose lives he’s touched in both life and death.

The limited-edition shirt is available as of April 12, well before the Sept. 17 Terry Fox Run — an annual event held nationwide for more than four decades.

Fox, who was from Port Coquitlam, achieved a remarkable feat in a life cut too short. He was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma just above the knee, which followed the amputation of his leg.

He dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean on Apr. 12, 1980, and began the Marathon of Hope.

His goal was to run across the country and reach the Pacific Ocean, but his cancer returned, and he was forced to stop on Sept. 1, 1980, after having run 5,373 kilometres.

Fox died on Jun. 28 at the age of 22 but his actions set the framework for a future that would see his name linked to trying to find a cure for an illness that affects so many people.

The Terry Fox Run has raised more than $850 million for the Terry Fox Foundation since 1980.
