Quebec byelection results: Québec Solidaire wins Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne riding

“We will not let anyone down,” says Québec Solidaire’s Guillaume Cliche-Rivard. On March 13, the Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne byelection results declared Cliche-Rivard a member of the National Assembly for the district. Diona Macalinga reports.

After a fierce byelection race between the Quebec Liberal Party and Québec Solidaire, Québec Solidaire wins the Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne riding. Guillaume Cliche-Rivard is officially declared the new member of the National Assembly (MNA) for the sud-ouest district.

The seat was left vacant last December when Quebec Liberal Party’s former leader Dominique Anglade resigned as MNA. Guillaume Cliche-Rivard, an immigration lawyer, had a sizeable lead with 45 per cent of the vote with about 80 per cent of boxes counted.

The Liberal candidate, Christopher Baenninger, was in second place with just over 28 per cent of the vote in a riding the Liberals had won 10 times in a row since its creation in 1994.

“This defeat does not mean the end of our engagement with the community in Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne. I will continue to work so that our voices are heard and to defend the values that we hold to heart,” said the Quebec Liberal Party candidate Christopher Baenninger in a speech, after seeing the byelection results.

“The election results of tonight was not what I was expecting,” said Umberto Macri, a Quebec Liberal Party supporter who attended the party’s election headquarters.

Elected as the new MNA, Guillaume Cliche-Rivard says it is an honour to represent the 85,000 residents living in the Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne district. Adding, “you can be certain that we will not let anyone down, that no one will be left behind.”

Turnout at the polls came up to 31 per cent, with Parti Québecois’ coming in third with a little over 2,000 votes (11.41 per cent) and Victor Pelletier of the Coalition Aveninr Québec following with 1,661 votes (9.36 per cent).

With its victory, Québec solidaire now has 12 seats in the provincial legislature, the Liberals hold 19, the PQ have three and there are two independents.

François Legault’s Coalition Avenir Quebec holds 89 of the legislature’s 125 seats.
