Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery reopen

The Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery, Canada’s largest cemetery, officially reopened Friday.

The cemetery closed to the public on Jan. 12, when unionized workers went on strike.

Early in March, the union representing cemetery workers (STTCNDDN-CSN) said it was without a contract since Dec. 31, 2018. It has been negotiating a wage increase since Nov. 2019.

The January strike followed the adoption of an unlimited general strike mandate in November.

Now after months of families being unable to grieve with their families, they are able to do so again.

In a statement regarding the reopening, the Cemetery says, “a significant portion of the cemetery’s territory is not cleared of snow, and the Cemetery will not be able to assist vehicles that get stuck on snowy roads or that break down on the site.”

The cemetery will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
