Dozens evacuated in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve fire Wednesday morning

MONTREAL – A major fire that broke out early Wednesday morning in a three-story residential building in Montreal’s east end prompted the evacuation of about 50 people in the area as a preventative measure and sent two firefighters to hospital.

The building is located near the intersection of Rouen and Dézéry streets, in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district.

The many evacuees were taken to the Francis-Bouillon arena, located next to the site of the fire.

And about nine to 11 families will not be able to reintegrate their apartments.

About 150 firefighters were on site tried to control the five alarm blaze which broke out at around 3 a.m.

Since the residences are very close to each other an extensive evacuation was carried out by authorities.

No residents appear to have been injured, but two firefighter needed to be transported to hospital due to injuries.

Their lives are not in danger.

The cause of the fire has still not been determined.
