Glass panes fall from downtown Montreal residential high-rise

It was a close call in downtown Montreal on Tuesday afternoon after two glass panes from one of the tallest residential high-rises in the city fell 55 stories – crashing onto the sidewalk. Luckily no one was injured.

The building is part of the Victoria sur le parc real estate project by developer Broccolini at 700 Saint-Jacques, under construction.

The Montreal fire department had to close Saint-Jacques, Gauvin, and Notre-Dame Streets near Robert-Bourassa boulevard at around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday as they evaluated the safety of the structure. Part of the area was still closed on Wednesday.

The builder was also on the scene and continues to work to ensure the safety, along with the fire department.

Some of the neighbouring buildings that are near the façade where the panes fell, have also been evacuated as a precautionary measure.
