Quebecers can get free legal advice this weekend

The Young Bar of Montreal (YBM) is offering free legal advice over the phone for the 40th edition of its legal helpline.

Quebecers can take advantage of this service on Saturday and Sunday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The helpline is aimed at improving access to justice for those faced with challenging legal issues who want more information about their rights.

The YBM is a non-profit organization representing 5,000 lawyers in Montreal with 10 years or less of call to the Barreau du Québec.

“Young lawyers are at the heart of our commitment to improve access to justice and to make a difference, year after year, in the lives of Quebec citizens,” said Alexandra Paquette, the YBM president, in a statement.

More than 100 lawyers and notaries will be working in collaboration with Jeune Barreau de Québec, Jeune Barreau de Laval, and the Canadian Association of Paralegals to provide the service.

“The Barreau du Québec has long been concerned about access to justice, and it is multiplying its efforts to concretely contribute to improving that access for the benefit of the greatest number of citizens,” said Catherine Claveau, the bâtonnière of Québec.

The YBM says, in a press release, that family law, neighbourly relations, consumer goods, labour and management of estates are the most common topics addressed by callers.

The free legal helpline number, open Saturday and Sunday, is 1-844-779-6232.
