Montreal police raid magic mushroom store on day it opens

By News Staff

Four people have been arrested in the raid of a magic mushroom dispensary that opened in Montreal Tuesday, police have confirmed to CityNews.

The SPVM raided the FunGuyz store, which opened downtown despite warnings from the city. The sale, production and possession of the drug is illegal in Canada.

Police would not confirm if those arrested were employees or customers.

The store, located on Ontario Street East and Avenue Goulet in the Village, offers various magic mushrooms and microdosing products with the hallucinogenic compound psilocybin.

A second Quebec store is set to open next week in Laval.

The chain of dispensaries currently operates 11 stores in Ontario. They are tolerated in the province, but some have already been raided by police and temporarily shut down.

In an interview with CityNews Monday, the owner of FunGuyz said his goal is to “speed up the process of legalizing psilocybin.”

The long-term effects of using the hallucinogens are still uncertain, but those who promote the product say psilocybin is effective in the treatment of mental-health challenges

According to the Health Canada website, while clinical trials with psilocybin have shown promising results, “at this time, there are no approved therapeutic products containing psilocybin in Canada or elsewhere.”
