Housing for individuals struggling with substance abuse in Montreal’s Hochelaga Maisonneuve borough will be expanding.
The federal and Quebec governments will be providing funding to expand the Pavillon André-Dumont, of the Maison l’Exode organisation, creating five additional rooms.
“Faced with an ever-increasing demand for housing, we are proud to be able to carry out this expansion. As a leader in social reintegration for dependent persons in Quebec,” said Martin Lafortune, General Manager, Maison l’Exode at the announcement on Wednesday morning.
The federal government will be investing $955,000 and the Quebec government will be investing $549,000.
The Pavillon André-Dumont is a Maison l’Exode shelter currently offering 17 beds for men and women in a safe, peaceful environment that encourages social reintegration.
“Everyone deserves a safe, affordable home. Men and women with substance abuse problems in Montreal will have more options for their social reintegration,” said Ahmed Hussen, Federal Minister of Housing, Diversity and Inclusion in a press release.
“Everyone sees right now the urgency to act – and that’s what we’re doing,” said Soraya, Martinez Ferrada, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion. “The Maison l’Exode works with people in a very difficult place – not maybe ready to be on their own – they need support. And that kind of project is more costly – takes more time – cause you want to make sure you’re doing them in a way that respects the dignity of the people.”
“I congratulate all the partners who contributed to this project, which meets an important need in Montreal,” added France-Élaine Duranceau, the Quebec Minister responsible for Housing.
