SPVM recruiting Quebec police school graduates by reimbursing training costs

By News Staff

Montreal police say they will reimburse training costs for graduates of Quebec’s police school in exchange for a commitment to serve.

The SPVM says it will pay graduates $10,500 to cover fees of the École nationale de police du Québec (ENPQ). In return, the police force is asking those graduates to commit to serve at the SPVM for the next five years.

The police force says it’s part of a recruitment effort to attract new recruits to Montreal.

“We are doing everything we can to make the SPVM an employer of choice,” police chief Fady Dagher said in a statement. “A new collective agreement was signed last June and now puts the SPVM in a good position in terms of salaries. Today, we want to ease the financial burden of new recruits by absorbing the ENPQ training costs.

“We hope that this new incentive will encourage them to come and pursue a career in Montreal.”

Since becoming police chief, Dagher has made recruitment one of his top priorities. The SPVM also committed to hire more racially diverse candidates, launching a targeted recruitment campaign in March with that goal in mind.
