Urgences-santé urges caution around bodies of water as construction holiday nears

By News Staff

With warm temperatures and construction holiday approaching, Quebec’s Urgences-santé is urging extra caution around water.

It’s all part of National Drowning Prevention Week (NDPW), which runs until July 23.

Drowning is still the third leading cause of unintentional death in Canada. Every year, 400 Canadians die from drowning.

And NDPW runs in the third week of July because that period has the highest number of drownings.

Urgences-santé wants to remind Quebecers to be safe around all bodies of water.

They offer the following water safety tips:

  • Be vigilant and eliminate all sources of distraction;
  • Have an adult dedicated to supervision and never leave a child alone near water;
  • Limit access to the residential swimming pool by a security fence;
  • Know CPR maneuvers;
  • Always wear a life jacket on a lake or river;
  • Avoid the consumption of alcohol or drugs.
