Gun violence appears to have slowed in the Montreal area over the past year. That’s what the latest data from Montreal police (SPVM) shows.
Over the past two years, shootings increased sharply.
SPVM recorded 144 shootings on its territory in 2021 and 128 in 2022.
Between January 1 and July 31, 2023, 50 shootings were recorded; a drop of 38 per cent.
While some see it as an indicator that the appointment of new police chief Fady Dagher is working, others believe it is far too early to make that conclusion.
It could be a temporary slowdown or a coincidence, or it could in fact be the result of multiple actions undertaken by the municipal police force in an effort to tackle increased gun violence – actions with the help of the federal, provincial, and municipal governments.
