More than half of Quebecers can converse in English: StatCan

By The Canadian Press

For the first time in the context of a census, more than half of Quebec residents can carry on a conversation in English.

That’s one of the revelations in new data published by Statistics Canada Tuesday entitled “Highlights on the English language in Quebec in 2021.”

The data show 51.7 per cent of Quebec residents in 2021 were able to have a conversation in English.

“In 2021, 4,344,550 residents of Quebec were able to carry on a conversation in English, which represents a historic high,” according to Statistics Canada.

The proportion of Quebec residents able to converse in English while having French as their mother tongue reached 42.2 per cent in 2021, compared to 31.4 per cent in 1991.
