Five university legal clinics to receive $500,000 in funding

By The Canadian Press

Five university legal clinics across Quebec will receive $500,000 in funding, announced Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette on Friday morning.

The Minister made the announcement at a press conference in front of the Clinique juridique de la Faculté de droit de l’Université de Montréal (UdeM), which will receive $150,000, enabling an additional

16 additional students to join the clinic.

The Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) legal clinic will receive $100,000, the University of Ottawa clinic $65,000, the Université de Sherbrooke clinic $83,000 and the McGill University clinic $100,000.

This funding comes on the heels of the passage of Bill 75, the Act to improve the accessibility and efficiency of justice, which, since last year, has enabled law students to offer legal advice rather than just legal information in university clinics. These clinics offer legal services free of charge, or at low cost.

“I can see how important university legal clinics are in the legal ecosystem,” said Mr. Jolin-Barrette.

Last year, the legal clinic at UdeM’s Faculty of Law provided services to 400 citizens.
