Jean-Talon byelection: 22% cast ballot in advance polling

By The Canadian Press

More than one-fifth of voters cast their ballot in the Jean-Talon byelection during Sunday and Monday’s advance voting.

In a Tuesday morning update, Elections Québec says the participation rate was 22 per cent.

In last year’s Quebec election, the advance voting rate for Jean-Talon reached 31 per cent.

In terms of total participation, people generally vote less in byelections than in general elections. The average participation rate for the last 10 byelections was 37 per cent.

But Jean-Talon voters have a history of high participation rates. The average participation for the last three byelections in the constituency was 48 per cent.

Monday evening Quebec Premier François Legault joined the CAQ candidate Marie-Anik Shoiry in the constituency.

The Jean-Talon byelection is Oct. 2. It’s the fourth byelection in that constituency since 2008.
