Cedars Run for Ovarian Cancer raises $143K for DOvEEgene Project

“Hugely important,” said Dr. Lucy Gilbert, the director of Gynecologic Oncology at McGill University Health Centre, about the 8th annual Cedars Run for Ovarian cancer that took place on Saturday in the Town of Mount Royal.

The eighth annual Cedars Run/Walk for Ovarian cancer took place Sunday in the Town of Mount Royal.

More than 400 participants – including families, friends, hospital employees, cancer patients and cancer survivors – took part in the fundraising event.

It involved a two-kilometre run/walk, a timed five- kilometre run/walk, and a timed 10-kilometre run.

The event, founded by ovarian cancer survivor Dominique Dagenais, raised $143,000 this year in the fight against ovarian cancer.

“We are just thrilled, just over the moon for the eighth annual Cedars Run for Ovarian Cancer,” said Jeff Shamie, president and CEO of the Cedars Cancer Foundation. “Today, women and men are coming together in the Town of Mount Royal raising awareness and vital funds to support Dr. Lucy Gilbert’s leadership in the DOvEEgene project at the McGill University Health Centre. You know it’s all about our inspiration.”

The funds go to support the DOvEEgene Project, developed by renowned gynecological oncologist Dr. Lucy Gilbert and her team. It is a new genomic test designed to detect ovarian and endometrial cancers as early as stage 1.

“I deal with women who have gynecological cancer, and ovarian and endometrial cancer is the biggest killer,” Gilbert told CityNews. “And all the funds that are being raised today will go towards a test called DOvEEgene test that will detect these cancers in time to cure women rather than firefighting. So, this is a cause that is hugely important to me: prevention.”
