850 City of Laval blue-collar workers go on strike Tuesday

By The Canadian Press

The 850 blue-collar workers at the City of Laval launched a 24-hour strike Tuesday.

On April 26, blue-collar workers voted 96 per cent in favour of a pressure tactics mandate that could go as far as a strike.

The president of the Syndicat des cols bleus de Laval (SCFP 4545), Louis-Pierre Plourde, says the work stoppage is because of a lack of transparency from labour representatives at the negotiating table.

The union is demanding Laval Mayor Stéphane Boyer get involved, while denouncing that the conflict has been going on for several years.

The union claims talks with the city have been blocked for months and says approximately 1,000 grievances have been undermining the daily lives of dozens of blue-collar workers for years.

The union members intend to march to city hall Tuesday afternoon – the day the municipal council meeting is held.

It also coincides with the Laval blood drive at Place Bell; Plourde and several union members say they will be present to meet with donors and explain their reasons for the one-day strike.
