Free parking, alternative drop-offs coming to Montreal airport to reduce traffic

By News Staff

The Montreal airport is pledging to implement new measures to reduce traffic buildups at Trudeau International Airport next year.

Aéroports de Montreal (ADM) says it will introduce alternative drop-off points to redistribute car traffic at the airport, and an improved payment system for parking lots.

Those measures are expected to be in full swing by next summer, ADM says in a news release. It estimates it will reduce up to 700 vehicles per hour during peak periods.

“My priority is to offer the best possible experience to travellers and users of the airport site,” said Yves Beauchamp, president and CEO of ADM. “In the short term, we are deploying robust measures that will add to those put in place during the past summer season.”

The alternative drop-off points will be on the east and west side of the airport at the new multi-story P4 parking lot, with shuttles leaving every five minutes. P4, which will have 2,800 parking spaces, will be open at the start of 2024.

Free parking for a limited period will be available in all lots beginning next year; parking lots will be at a discounted price for up to four hours or less; and the price will also be reduced for further parking lots.

Aéroports de Montreal says those new measures, coupled with recent changes to the airport’s public transit accessibility, will drastically reduce traffic. Those changes are more buses on the 747 route linking the airport to the city; tickets purchasable online; and automated or staffed mobile sales terminals installed in the airport terminal.
