Official opposition calling for City of Montreal to lower tax increase

The official opposition at Montreal city hall is calling on the Plante administration to lower its planned tax hike by 1.5 per cent.

On Wednesday – Ensemble Montreal presented amendments it would like to see made to the 2024 budget.

The City of Montreal released its budget Nov. 15, 2023. It included a 4.9 per cent tax increase for residential properties and a 4.6 per cent increase for commercial properties.

The opposition accusing Montreal mayor Valérie Plante of not keeping her promise.

“Mayor Plante had assured us that property taxes would be limited to inflation throughout her second mandate. What is being deposited is just simply not true. The 4.9 per cent explosion in residential taxes, 9 per cent over two years. The biggest increase in 14 years exceeds both inflation today and projected inflation for 2024,” said Alan DeSousa, the Mayor of the Saint-Laurent borough and official opposition’s finance critic.

They’re calling for tax cuts to apply to residential and commercial properties.

Ensemble Montreal is also asking the city to reallocate spending – so there is more for the boroughs and the homeless.

“This is caused by the terrible management of Projet Montreal – who spends like there is no tomorrow,” DeSousa added.
